This is a redesign of Chinese traditional handcraft, designers include traditional Chinese culture litterateurs, modern designers and handicraftsman. One symbol of Chinese traditionalculture is BiMoZhiYan (Chinese traditional writing brush(Bi), ink sticks(Mo), Xuan paper(Zhi) and ink slab ) and one of the most significant living and working style is use writing brushes to write and paint. Since using traditional writing tools are inconvenience in nowadays’ life, these tools are far away from modern people life.
Now, we are trying to redesign a kit of BiMoZhiYan. Through well-designed combination and modern-looking appearance, anyone could use traditional writing tools to write within area of an A3 paper. Therefore, this kit is popular in Chinese calligraphy enthusiasts.
During 2016, our team traveled 1,863 miles, about half of the China, and found about 20 handicraftsmen that experts in Chinese traditional writing tools. We gathered all experts we found, and finally, we began to innovate.
The kit is made by an entire wood, there is no seam on the surface of the kit, except lid. In the kit, there are writing brushes, ink stick, Xuan paper, ink slab and other related accessories like ruler and ink paste. Those accessories were redesigned based on their traditional looking, made these more acceptable by modern buyers. According to different customers’ requests, copper letters that on the kit box could be custom-made. These copper letters not only are device that connect kit box, but also these could be taken from box, using as seals.
