This topic focuses on the "lonely island" that survives in the gap between the great changes between the city and the countryside - urban villages.
Urban villages are a special phenomenon in the process of economic development in China, characterized by extremely intensive residential and living spaces, and accommodating hundreds of millions of urban laborers. As a form of social agglomeration with significant changes under the great changes of urbanization, urban villages have made contributions to the economic development of the city by their residents; On the other hand, it also carries the label of "dirty, messy, and poor" for a long time, which is out of place with the surrounding areas in the bustling city.
This topic presents documentary visual images with books as the carrier by means of field research and field photography. The project selected the urban villages in the city of Guangzhou as the research and shooting objects, observing and recording the different development landscapes of each village in the process of urbanization.
The concept of "survival in the cracks" runs through the book from beginning to end. The starting page is a virtual " urban villages sky map" composed of images taken by looking up at the sky in the urban villages. The ending page is a lonely island presented from the perspective of God overlooking all living beings. The middle pages are divided into chapters to present the unique life scene of the urban villages, such as "shared hangers" telephone poles, "shared beds" stone chairs, the streets and alleys that are dark as night during the day are like "time tunnels", "twisted braids" made of disorganized wires, the posters for renting houses are like "colored sugar paper". "No littering", "no parking", "no defecating" signs are everywhere.
By showing the state of "survival in the cracks" of the urban villages in the city, the work tries to explore the relationship between the scarce living space and the occupation of resources in the urban villages under the special development period and the social background of epidemic prevention and control. Presenting various living conditions of all sentient, showing the unique and interesting "lonely island in the city". Preserve the unique imprint of the times that is about to sink into the dust of history due to renovation and demolition.
